Christmas Cards for our Troops!!!

Hello crafters!

Today I want to share with you a website I just stumbled upon. It is called Operation Christmas cards and it is all about sending a card at Christmas to let our troops know how much they are appreciated. They are overseas away from family and friends during the holiday season which has to be quite difficult.

I served in the United States Air Force many years ago and I lived in Germany for two year and I can tell you first hand how difficult it is to be away from family during Christmas. Had I gotten one of these cards I would have been completely overjoyed and touched that a complete stranger would take the time to brighten my day.

I am breaking away from my normal crafting posts to blog about another topic near and dear to my heart....parent involvement.

As a past Head Start teacher and administrator I have worked side by side with parents in the field of education and have seen the dramatic results parents can make when they choose to be involved at school. No one can come up with all the ideas, all the strategies, all the initiatives and programs by themselves. We need a variety of perspectives to assist our youth in being successful in their education.

As a member of the 2011 Mom Congress (Parenting.com) I was asked this week to write a letter to my daughter talking about how I plan to work to work to make her school and the education she receives the best that it can be. I wanted to share my letter to my daughter with each of you in hopes it will inspire many of you to share you own stories or to get involved in your own children's schools and education.

I want you to have the best education possible! This is not limited just to academics either, I want you to grow up to be a well rounded person. From my own experience in the field of education for me this includes:

Academics
Health
Nutrition
Social/Emotional development

With the above in mind, I want you to know how hard I will continue to work not only to make sure that you have a well rounded education experience, but that all children in our country receive the same.

I believe in the ability we all have to choose...we can choose to complain about what we do not like or we can choose to roll up our sleeves and pitch in to make it better. I choose to roll up my sleeves and pitch in. I have no desire to rally troops for a cause. My desire is to work with the staff in your school to build a relationship of mutual trust and respect and then find out what the needs are and work to fill them. In order to create educational change we need to unite with teachers, administrators, custodians, cooks, aides, and all staff at the school and district level. We need to work hand in hand to bring about the change that is needed.

You are quite fortunate to be living in a state with a strong education system. Even more fortunate to live in community within our state that has strong schools. There is room for improvement of course just as there is anywhere, but you are very lucky. You have amazing teachers at your school and support staff as well. Parent Involvement is also strong at your school thanks to the leadership of your principal. I promise you that I will continue working hand in hand with everyone at school to provide a top notch education for you. This includes continuing to serve in a leadership role for character education, helping out each week in your classroom, serving on the governing board, volunteering for school events, and working to improve the school nutrition program. This year we are also working to get more parents and grandparents involved at school so there is even more help for students who need it.

I feel so fortunate to be able to contribute the time I do to making a difference at your school!

The other day I posted how I would be teaching a class at the upcoming Texas Stampede. Below you will see photos of the 2 projects that are a part of my class.

First we will be creating a cute little frame that can house a favorite photo. You can personalize this by adding your own word in the round tag that says "love" right now. So you could put a name or another word there.

The second project is a darling little purse note pack.

This class used 3 main Provo Craft projects including the Imainge, Cricut Expression, and Cuttlebug. We will only have time to use the Cuttlebug in class so the items from the Imagine and Expression are pre-printed and cut.

Hello!

One of my all time favorite things to do is to teach paper crafting classes! I do not get the opportunity often enough.

Most of you who read my blog also know I am a member of the Cricut Circle, and also on the Cricut Circle Design Team. I do monthly projects for the Cricut Circle magazine which you get if you are a member of the Cricut Circle.

So Provo Craft has asked me to teach a class at the Texas Stampede in March. See that little Texas Stampede button I have off to the right? So cute, don't you think? Anyway, if you are interested in attending the Stampede the registration is now open to the general public. I've included a link below.

Pinch Me!

Those of you who know me well know I have a strong education background. For many years I taught with the Head Start program and then moved on into Early childhood education administration. I am determined to do what I can to help children be successful in their education. For the past two years as my youngest daugther entered public school, I have been a volunter at school. In the classroom, as part of the school governing board, on committees, and a strong advocate for character education! Most recently I have gotten involved on the district level working on projects for the Superintendent of schools. So many great things happening in our district that I want to be a part of!

On January 27th I received an e-mail from Parenting magazine saying it was the last chance to enter the Mom Congress contest. I had until the 31st to submit a 300 word essay and photo for a chance to be chosen. I was energized by this opportunity and went to work writing. Well, if you know me well at all, you know I have a lot to say! Really? Only 300 words? This took me a very long time as I had to continue to find ways to tweak and change until I had reached the 300 word limit. I had EXACTLY 300 words in my essay! LOL

So fast forward to Sunday February 13th. I received a message in my inbox that said, "Congratulations Lisa. You have been selected to represent Wisconsin at Parenting magazine’s Mom Congress on Education and Learning conference in Washington, DC this April"!

For a moment or two I just stared at that e-mail in disbelief? Seriously? Out of all the very involved and talented parents I know we have in Wisconsin, they are asking me to travel to Washington D.C. to represent our great state? Jaw dropping, really. But within minutes I went from shock to pure elation! This is an opportunity of a lifetime for me! So in April I am off to Washington D.C. will 50 other mom's who are working hard to change the face of education! We will spend 4 days meeting, learning, and connecting and I hope to return home even more energized than I already am! (if that is possible) U.S. Education Secretary, Arne Duncan will also be speaking at the event which should be very exciting!

So, I just wanted to share a bit with you...........and part of the reason I do not post as frequently is that I do many hours each week in volunteer work for our schools. I challenge each of you to get involved! Find your passion, a topic that is really important to you at your child's school. Then use your skills to advocate for change, see what you can do to help, and get others engaged! Together we will work to help all students be successful!

I would love to hear what you have done or are currently doing to help out your school or school district! Maybe next year you will go to Mom Congress representing your state!

I love getting to try out all kinds of products as a Buzz Agent and then giving my honest feedback of what I think, and what others think as well.

Right now they have pictures up for two upcoming resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean that look amazing. Looks so much better than the snow I see out my window right now! Where have I been?

You are probably wondering where I have been? LOL

Well we were gone for a couple of weeks on vacation to the happiest place on earth...Disney World. Then of course throw Thanksgiving in there......well, you know how it goes. So here I am, finally posting on my very neglected blog!

I thought I would start by posting a couple of pictures from our vacation. I just love going to Disney! The first picture is right after our daughter got a make over in the Bippidy Boppidy Boo boutique. We normally do something really special like a character meal. This year we decided if she wanted to do the princess make over we would do that instead and she did.

The second photo is from our day at Cocoa beach. Warm and sunny and so relaxing. Honestly I think I'd love to live by the Ocean, and when I say that I mean right on the Ocean! I'm not a big swimmer, but I sure love to sit for hours and just look at the enormity of all that water. Something so peaceful and calming to me. Anyway, my daughter wanted to be buried in the sand and her wish came true!

The third photo is from Universal Studios Island of Adventure and the new Harry Potter section. Let me tell you that this is fantastic! Very much how it looks in the movie. Although I have to admit there wasn't a ton to do in this section. We did the ride of course. The wand shop was down do to technical difficulties and by the time it opened it was swamped. The candy store had a line a mile long. It was cool to see but they need to seriously add more attractions to this area to make it really cool.

Family Fun

Today I thought I would share some pictures of our family trip to the pumpkin patch. We go each year and try to do something a little different. There is a haunted house, hay ride, pumpkin launch, corn maze, hay bale maze, petting zoo, mock graveyard, etc. It is a lot of fun!

Ok, so like I said, the Cricut Imagine is cool. I talked in my previous post about how it can print and cut. I also shared how it can print and cut layers that you can build to create dimension.

Well to even make things more cool, did you know you can add different colors and patterns to your designs before you print and cut? That's right! In addition to the art cartridges there are also pattern cartridges with colors and patterns! Also if you know the RBG color of a particular paper and want to match it up, you can do that too!

Nope, don't know how to do all of that yet. Like I said I need some time to really sit down and learn my new machine. I will get time and then I will share more with you.

Simply cannot get a new toy without getting some fun accessories, right? I mean really.....you have to get the bells and whistles too!

Above are a couple of art cartridges I have to go with my new Imagine. I was surprised at how many cartridges have already been released for the Imagine. Really cool stuff! I love how not only can you print and cut, but you can also print and cut layers and then build dimensional pieces. That is awesome because I love dimension!

Newest Crafting Toy!

Hey there!

I thought today I would share my latest crafting toy with all of you! I was thrilled to received a brand new Cricut Imagine machine a couple of weeks ago from Provo Craft. I am really excited because I get to use my Imagine in my design work with the Cricut Circle. I have been playing with it a bit and so far I am really enjoying it.

This machine prints designs using HP inkjet technology. Once you have printed an item out the machine then cuts it around the edge. Very cool! I've done a few simple cuts and really need a good block of time to sit down and really learn to use the Imagine. Once I do, I will create something really cool to share with you here on the blog, so stay tuned for the coming in the near future!

So I am a Buzz Agent. If you don't know what that is, it is a really cool site where you get to be part of campaigns to try products or services and then give feedback. I've been doing it for a couple of years now and it is fun. You give honest and open feedback about the products on surveys, facebook, and now my blog. Why my blog? Well, because the latest campaign is scrapbook related, that's why!

I got this pile of Elmer's and Xacto products as part of the campaign to try. Well I have to say that I am really liking everything! The adhesives work great and the tools are also working very well. Have any of you tried any of these product? I'd love to hear what you think.

Oh my, where does the time go? It appears it has been a couple of weeks since I posted! I have been so very busy and hopefully by the second week in November things will slow down. I have a huge project undertaking at my daughter's school that is taking 30-40 hours of my time per week, but it is temporary until mid-November. Then hopefully things will be back to normal.

Now for big news....many of you already know that I am part of the Cricut Circle Design Team. For those of you who didn't know, well, now you do! I am so lucky to get the chance to create on a regular basis using my very favorite piece of equipment called the Cricut Expression. I love, love, love my machine! Now I get to use it to inspire Cricut Circle members in the monthly online magazine! So what news do I have for you.......how will it benefit you???????

First of all I wanted to let all of you know that this coming Saturday September 18th I will have a booth set up for Paper Fashions Boutique in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. This is the 6th annual Northwoods fall convention hosted by Nosser's Stamp and Scrap. This year there will be over 17 vendors set up and lots of fun make and takes. Back at the end of June I joined the Cricut Circle. What is the Cricut Circle? It is a group of Cricut enthusiasts who chat on a message board for members only, attend events in their area and around the country sponsored by Provo Craft, have an opportunity to enter/win contests, have an inspiring monthly magazine in PDF format, chances to win weekly prizes, you get 4 exclusive member only Cricut cartridges per year, etc. That is a brief summary and more is coming I've heard! But let me tell you what my experience has been like in the past two months.

I joined the Cricut Circle at the end of June. It started July 1st. I received my welcome package about the 3rd week in July containing the first exclusive members only Cricut Cartridge called French Manor. I also was invited to the special Provo Craft gala event at CHA in Chicago as a Circle Member. I attended and as a result was given a new Cricut Imagine ($599 retail value). I also got a brand new cartridge ($89 retail value) Next I attended a larger event a couple of days later at the CHA consumer show where there were over 100 members in attendance. Not only was it fun talking with fellow Cricut members, but hearing about all the upcoming Cricut stuff from Provo Craft was also awesome! At the end of this event I won a Cricut Cake! ($299 retail value) Yeah!

Then there was a Wisconsin meet up event scheduled for about a week later in the Milwaukee area and I drove down for that. About 40 other Circle members came from Wi and neighboring states. It was so much fun and we got to Yudu and item we brought. I did a tote bag, others did T'shirt, scrapbook albums, etc. I won a T-shirt at this event. Everyone in attendance got a goodie bag with Cricut product.

In July there was also an online promotion where you could nominate your school for a Cricut Expression which I did. So my school is getting a Cricut expression free of charge. ($299 retail value) How cool is that?

In the short two months I've been a member I feel my membership has been paid 3 times over! I know there is so much more to come as well....a swarm (400 Circle members) out in Utah in October and it was just announced there will be a Cruise in 2011!

Anyway, I can refer others to become Cricut Circle members. Prima Flowers

Today I have another post up over at Craft Test Dummies all about Prima flowers. I love Prima flowers and I really like reflecting back on where Prima flowers started several years ago and where they are today.

Make sure you follow the link above to read my article over at Craft Test Dummies and then below you will find step by step instructions for creating your own copies of these designs!

1. I painted my wooden block ivory using acrylic paint.

2. Next I took a glue pen and glitter and added some sparkle all the way around to each edge so once I had mounted paper on the block you would have a sparkled edge.

3. Then I took and cut patterned paper squares that coordinated with my flowers to fit on each side of my block and attached them with a liquid glue. You will need to unscrew the paper clip to cover the top.

4. Then I attached one flower to each of the 4 sides.

5. Then I added my photos and to finish it off, tied a neat wired bow at the bottom of the paper clip.

1. Cut patterned cardstock to fit around the base.

2. Cut a coordinating color cardstock to fit behind the patterned cardstock so a bit is showing for contrast.

3. Stick both strips around the jar.

4. Tie a bow using a coordinating piece of ribbon to the neck of the jar.

5. Place a Prima Kalanchoe Watermelon flower right on the front of the patterned cardstock. The pearl is already in the center of the flower for you!

Prima Say it in Crystals

Those of you who know me, know how much I love bling! Well Prima Marketing Say it in Crystals has to be one of my all time favorite bling related companies! I just love the crystal flourishes and they keep coming out with such wonderful designs and have included pearls as well!

I recently did a review of Prima's Say it in Crystals over at Craft Test Dumies all about Prima bling and it is the brand new release from CHA Summer. I want to make sure that I put the step by step instructions for the designs on my blog so you would know how to recreate the designs that I made if you desire. That information is below.

Before you begin, make sure you head over to Craft Test Dummies and read the review post first since it has so much information you will want to read!

I have two projects here and the first I will list step by steps for will be the canvas project you see above.

1. Start with an 8"x10" canvas
2. Use a border and corner punch to create a decorative frame that fits your photo.
3. Cut a strip of purple cardstock wide enough to hold the Crystal Swirl piece. I used a flourish stamp and watermark stamp pad to create a light pattern to my purple cardstock. Then I added a thin border of darker purple cardstock that coordinates with my frame behind the crystal panel.
4. Next place the Crystal swirl at the top of the purple panel.
5. Add your Cottage Blossoms to the swirl.
6. Next add some silver glitter to the Prima Craftable flower in a scattered manner.
7. Plade the Prima Love Letter Rose on top of the glittered flower and attach at the bottom of your Crystal swirl.
8. Last I added some glittered chipboard letters to spell "mom" at the bottom.

The next project is an easy birthday card.

1. First I cut apart two of the Say it in Crystal Colorful Lines to use on this card. Then I traced along the edge of my brown paper and cut along the line so the crystals would be a perfect fit.
2. I covered my card blank with striped paper and then attached the brown curved cut paper on the top.
3. Then I attached my Prima Say it in Crystal Colorful Lines along the edge as shown.
4. Next I took one flower from each of the 3 packages and attached on top of the Crystal strips in a cluster
5. On my computer I printed out Happy Birthday strips in blue ink, cut them and placed them under the edge of the flowers. You could also stamp the words and cut them out as well.

Heritage Layout

One of my favorite types of layouts to create are Heritage layouts. Something about old pbotos just fascinate me. It takes you back to the days when life seemed less complicated. Anyway, this photo is some of my ancestors from many years ago and I love it. Look how stoic they are in the photo! Seems now we never want to take a photo without smiling!

Scrapbook Project Kits

Some of you know, and some of you may not know that I have a website where you can go to purchase scrapbook project kits. These kits are all made up for you with the papers and embellishments along with a set of full color photo instructions. I've done the shopping, the coordinating, the designing, and some of the cutting work for you. All you have to do is sit down and put it together. I started this website in June and I am having so much fun with it!

Once a kit sells out then it moves to the previous kit page and the instructions then become available. Right now there is the Good Eats Recipe album that sold out a few weeks ago and now the instructions are available!

In September I will be releasing one complete kit and the second project is going to be just instructions. Many of you have said that you would like to be able to purchase instructions more quickly so I decided to try it this way for September. So if you have been waiting for some instructions without having to purchase an entire kit, then September is the month for you!

If you are a kit person like me and would rather have everything ready for you then there is a great selection of kits on my current kits page as well. This month features a vacation mini album and a beautiful boxed card kit.

Garden Party Favor

It is harvest time here in Wisconsin. By now many tomatoes are fully ripened and ready to pick and can. Melons and pumpkins are either ready or getting closer. Soon we will be storing food for another long and cold winter here.

Before summer is completely over why not host a little garden party. Celebrate the flowers you still have in bloom and a wonderful summer growing season. I've created a little garden party favor box which you could fill with candy or perhaps flower seeds for next season?

I created the little box using my Cricut Wild Card cartridge and used some window plastic to line the inside of the window on the front. Then I used a couple of flower punches to create the layered flowers on the front of the project. Add some buttons and a bow for interest and dimension!

Back to School

It is that time of the year where the kids begin going back to school! I've heard that some schools have already started up for the year. My daughter doesn't start back until Sept 1st. I think she is getting bored at home with mom and is ready to go back to something a bit more entertaining!

I love making her something special for back to school to create excitement! I will also be altering her pencil box to take so she has a little piece of home in her desk. Afterall, I don't want her to forget about her mom while she is there all day!

Weddings

I love creating wedding cards that are handmade. You can really create some elegant cards by stamping and then heat embossing.

The particular project above is a wedding invitation with a response card and coordinating envelopes. I think the heat embossing makes the set look so professionally done!
The stamps I used are an old set from Stampin Up that I am sure they are no longer making. But I have used this particular set over and over again because I think it make such beautiful invitations.

Altered Journal Project

So I love to alter things, right? One of my favorite things to alter is a journal. There is just something about creating a special book to write in that excites me. This is my latest altered journal made with some pre-made embellishments and a beautiful Cricut layered butterfly? Notice the swirled design on the butterfly? The top layer is cut from a transparency and then stamped with permanent brown ink on the transparency. I also added wire antennae's to my butterfly using some copper wire. I think the more textures you can add to a project the more interesting the project is!

I also used some Prima bling on the journal along with a fabric covered button by K and Company. So many fun elements on this journal. This is actually the journal I took with me to CHA so I could keep notes in about my meetings with manufactuers.

Another fun project!

If you have followed my blog for the past couple of year I know that I do not have to tell you how much I love flowers! It seems like I add flowers to many of my projects. For some reason, flowers just seem to make me smile.

In the above candle tin project I used my Cricut to create several tiered sizes of flowers and then I curled the petal with my embossing stylus and layered them with Zots in between. I topped each flower with a special gem or element in the center. When I created the leaves I also used my embossing stylus to create a vein down the center so I could pinch it together to create some dimension as well!

Baby Shower Centerpiece

New project

Hello everyone!

I wanted to share a project with you that I recently created. Believe it or not I am already thinking about Christmas...crazy, huh? I love making up hostess gifts to have on hand to take along when I am invited to party. The holidays are surely a good time to have a few things just for this purpose.

As you can see above in the picture I decided to create a cookie jar for the holidays. I used my Cricut Expression to cut the die cut shapes you see on the front and top of the jar. I just love layering things and usually have dimension on all of my projects. For some reason flat just doesn't work for me!

Alrighty, my blog will be idle for about a week while I attend CHA in Chicago! CHA is the very large twice a year Craft and Hobby Trade show. So I will be heading for Chicago soon! As most of you know I design for the Crafts Unleashed blog and of course that keeps me busy and out of trouble! LOL

Recently, my good friend Jenny Rohrs has asked me to be her Paper Crafting Specialist for her website which is Craft Test Dummies. I was thrilled that she asked and even more excited that I will be attending Summer CHA in Chicago with Jenny representing Craft Test Dummies! What does that mean? Well, I will be working hard to find the latest trends in the paper crafting world and showcasing them over on the Craft Test Dummies blog! This will be my first time attending the show as media and I am thrilled to be filling this role for Jenny's website!

Three things!!!

1. Update on the lost tooth situation...so last night the tooth fairy came, took the tooth and replaced it with some money. Again it is 5:30 am and we hear crying coming from Meliah's room. Oh my, what could be happening this morning at 5:30 am to warrant another early wake up? Well, she was upset because the tooth fairy left her money instead of a toy? Huh? Who ever said anything about a toy? Perhaps next time we shall buy a nice bumpy lumpy toy and put that under her pillow! Here is hoping tomorrow she sleeps later than 5:30 am!!!

Lost Tooth!

So this morning we were up early.....very early! You know as parents that although you have a plan in your mind, well things don't go quite as planned. Like you plan to go to bed at a certain time and then get up at a certain time. I think your kids see you as having all this power and making all the decisions when in fact while we get to do that some of the time, our kids don't realize how much they really dictate your life without even knowing it!

For example this morning our 6 year old comes in the bedroom at 5:30 am..........seriouly! She yells, "guess what"? Oh come on, it's 5:30 and surely I do not share your same enthusiasm at this time of day. So I look and the girlie is grinning from ear to ear. I say, "why in the world are you up so early it is only 5:30"? To which I hear this reply, "but mom, I lost my tooth"!

Ok, so rewind....yesterday it was very loose. We worked off and on all day trying to get it out but it was really still hanging on very tightly in the front. So we left it figuring that today would be a new day. Well it was....at 5:30 am! Of course she was so excited she would not go back to sleep. So guess what? We were all up at 5:30 am to start our day.

Yep, that is the life of a parent......that is what it is all about....that is what we signed on for. She has been beaming all day long and every place we have gone she makes sure that they know about her tooth. We went to the bank and they didn't notice so she makes this comment like "oh, wow it feels so weird where this tooth used to be" which of course let to an inquiry by the teller. In other words, "hint, hint." She has been so cute, so funny.

So you notice in the above photo that it appears the tooth has grown at a rapid rate since this morning? Not so! Her two bottom teeth were actually growing in behind the existing baby teeth so it really had a head start before it finally pushed the one in front of it out!

So she calls me "Nana Banna Wanna" and I call her Nina Beana Weena", kind of silly names. Anyway, today I am calling her "Nina Beana, my toothless Weena." I asked her if she likes that and she grinned at me with that toothless grin and said, "love it mom."

A book review and giveaway!

A few days ago in the mail I received a book that I had been interested in reviewing. This was a free copy I received from Writer's Lair Books so I could reveiw it and then post it on my blog to give away! That is right, one of you lucky blog readers is actually going to win this book!

The name of the book is "When A Woman Takes an Axe to a Wall" by Allegra Bennett.

First of all the title intrigued me. I wanted to know more, wanted to read the stories in this book. It is a collection of short stories from all different women. The stories are filled with women of courage and change. Women who held their heads high even when times were tough! Women who were not afraid to "take and axe to a wall."

I enjoyed so many of the stories and a couple of them even related to what I am going through right now with the process of starting my own business. So this was an excellent read at an excellent point in my life.

I encourage each of you to find your own copy if you do not win this one. The stories inside these pages will inspire you!

First of all I want to wish each of you a wonderful Mother's Day! I am spending today with my husband and 6 year old daughter, heading to my sister's house to meet up with my parents for a yummy lunch. (fingers crossed my sister is making her delicious homemade ice cream)

Now the photo above is a welcome candle stick light with a shade that I altered using the brand new DeLovely line by Cosmo Cricket. This line is fresh, lively and fun! So many spring and summer colors that I have to say it is just "DeLoveliest" line ever! My website is also currently under development so hopefully I wiill get to see some of that soon which I am also very excited about! In case you are stopping by my blog for the first time and don't know about my new venture, here is a little information for you.

I am starting a project based kit club. Each month I will offer on average two brand new kits for sale at the beginning of the month with full step by step color instructions and the supplies to create the project. You stop by the site and choose the kits you want to purchase. I will rotate between layout, card, home decor/altered items, and mini album kits. Each month you will get something differnt. There is no subscription so you choose the kits you like. Quantities will be limited and when they are gone, they are gone! The good news is that once kits are gone I will also be selling the instructions individually so if for some reason you didn't want to purchase the kit, you can come back and purchase instructions!
